Situated just outside the main gate of Naval Station
Newport, Bishop's 4th Street Diner is a cheap-eats
flashback amidst; indeed, other restaurants in the
immediate surrounding area are run-of-the-mill commercial
joints, making Bishop's all the more appealing. Built in
the 1950's, the diner is much wider than the
Worcester-built diners of the previous two decades. Great
use of front wall space for windows makes any booth a nice
seat (though the view of the traffic circle out is rather
unscenic), and the diner has a little depth in the back
left corner, giving everyone a seat.
The Portuguese population of the area has left Bishop's
with an interesting addition to the menu--Portuguese sweet
bread toast and Portuguese-style French toast. Do not pass
these by, they are tremedous. The service was efficient
and the prices were very diner-esque. One of my companions
got a Mexican omlette and homefries; being a sort of
afficianado of diner homefries, let me say that Bishop's
are great.
If in Newport and looking for a quick meal, don't miss
Bishop's, it's a mere 5 minutes from downtown.
